Pelvis Ultrasound

Why an ultrasound of the female pelvis?

Your Doctor will suggest you have an ultrasound pelvis for a number of reasons including pelvic pain, menstrual problems and post menopausal bleeding.
Preparation

Please contact Mokoia Radiology 0800 466 564 for an appointment. You will need to have a full bladder for this examination. Please drink one litre of water, one hour before your appointment time. The water in your bladder assists us to see the pelvic organs.

FEMALE PATIENTS: This examination usually requires an endovaginal scan. You may be asked if you are menstruating. If so, we would do this scan when menstruation has concluded, unless it is urgent.

Who does the test?

A Sonographer (ultrasound technician) and/ or Radiologist (Doctor specialising in radiology) will be involved in your examination. The Sonographer or Radiologist will perform the examination and record the ultrasound. The Radiologist will review these images and provide a written report to your Doctor.

The procedure

A pelvic ultrasound appointment takes 15 - 30 minutes.

The ultrasound pelvis examination can be performed two ways:

A trans-abdominal ultrasound, where the ultrasound probe is placed on your lower abdomen and gently moved over the skin to take the ultrasound images.

An endovaginal scan, where a tampon-sized probe is inserted into the vagina. The endovaginal ultrasound probe is covered in a sterile sheath and covered in ultrasound gel. The endovaginal scan is only used in consultation with the patient. This method is used to obtain optimum images of the anatomy of the uterus, particularly on the lining of the uterus (the endometrium) and of the ovaries. The endovaginal scan takes about 10 minutes.

After the examination

The radiologist will review the images and provide a written report to your referring doctor. Please settle your account on the day of the examination.
