Duplex Doppler Venous Leg Scan

Why have your veins scanned?

Your Specialist or GP will ask you to have a venous scan if you have varicose veins, to assess if there are any blockages and whether the valves in your veins are working properly.

Preparation

No special preparation is required for this examination.

Who does the test?

A Sonographer (technician specialising in ultrasound) will perform the examination and record the ultrasound images.

The Procedure

You will be asked to change into a cotton gown and lie on a narrow bed. The Sonographer will spread warm gel on the area to be examined. This will allow us to obtain high quality images. The Sonographer will ask you to lie on your back initially and then turn onto your stomach about halfway through the examination to examine the veins at the back of your legs.

After the examination is completed, the Sonographer will wipe the gel off your skin, and you will be allowed to change into your own clothes.

How long does it take?

The procedure takes 60 minutes per leg.

After the examination

The Radiologist will review the images and provide a written report to your referring doctor.

Please settle your account on the day of the examination.
