Why have a CT scan (Computerised tomography)?
You have been referred for a CT scan by your Doctor. This information will help you to be informed about the procedure.
What is a CT scan?
CT or computerised tomography is an X-ray examination that allows detailed cross sectional images of body areas. The scanner has a table lying through a large metal "doughnut". The staff will position the bed until the area to be examined lies inside the circle.
The CT staff will go behind a partition to operate the scanner. They are able to talk to you during the scan and will let you know what is occurring. You may be asked to hold your breath while some of the CT images are taken. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask at any time. When you are in the CT scanning room, the CT staff can hear you through an intercom.
Preparation
Our receptionist will give you:
- Instructions where to go for your CT scan;
- Preparation needed before your scan.
- How to arrange a prior approval from your medical insurance company for your CT examinations. This means you can send them the invoice for payment; rather than pay it first and then claim from your insurer.
- What to do after your CT scan is completed.
- Some CT scans require an injection of contrast medium (see separate contrast information) This contrast medium shows up on the CT films, and enables the Radiologist to identify some organs or areas more clearly.
Some CT scans require you to drink a provided drink prior to the scan to show up your bowel on the scans.
If you have allergies or asthma, please discuss this with the receptionist when you make your appointment, and with the CT staff.
The procedure
A CT scan usually takes 20 - 60 minutes depending on the type of scan required. The radiographer and radiologist will look at the CT images to ensure all the necessary images have been taken. Occasionally they may ask to take some additional images, if they feel they have not seen an area clearly.
When your CT scan is completed, the Radiologist will interpret the images and send a report to your Doctor. A CD will be sent either to you or to your Doctor. If you receive them, it is important to keep them safely as they will be useful in the future if you require another CT scan.
